OUR FARM
Pastures nearby Počítky village in the protected landscape area of Žďárské vrchy, about 5 km north-east from the Žďár nad Sázavou town, 600-700 m above sea level.
All season continuous open air grazing, no buildings used, own hay during winter. Fences mainly of non-electric wire-netting, during lambing period complemented by electric nets against foxes. Grazing occasionaly organized by electric bands, too. The herd is used to shepherd dogs.
Farm with bio-production and health control, negligible risk TSE status.
The herd is half-closed: no females are introduced - only breeding rams in case of need.
Rams mainly of lines with New Zealand origin. Used breeding lines: Aragon, Claymoor, Knife, Knop, Model Man, complementary some newer lines. Basic herd of between 150 and 200 ewes, 100% Romney.
At the end of March, before lambing period, sheep are sheared around udder so that new lambs can get easily to milk. Hoofes are taken care of. The herd is treated with wormer and re-vaccinated for enterotoxemia (Covexin inj.). Then the herd moves to lambing pasture. The lambing period takes from the end of April to the end of May. Old rams are formed to separate flock in the half of July and moved to distant pasture. Lambs are weighted, treated with wormer and vaccinated at the begining of August.
Lambs weaning between half of August and begining of September. Then, later in September, comes the main wool shearing. Animal hoofs are treated if necessary. Before winter wormer may be used according to laboratory inspection of parasite eggs in dropping. Breeding female lambs are tupped together with ewes (so in the first year) from the end of November.
